KR Gouri Amma national award: Noted Cuban social worker and human rights advocate, Aleida Guevara has been selected for the first KR Gouri Amma national award.

 

 

Key Points

 

Noted Cuban social worker and human rights advocate, Aleida Guevara has been selected for the first KR Gouri Amma national award  instituted by the K.R. Gouri Amma Foundation. The award comprising $3,000, a statuette and citation will be given away by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at a function to be held here on January 5. Dr. Aleida is also an active member of the Cuban Medical Mission that works to improve the health profile of children in Latin America.

 

The jury, chaired by former Education Minister M.A. Baby and comprising Binoy Viswam, MP, and P.C. Beenakumari, managing trustee of the foundation, unanimously chose Dr. Guevara for the award for her efforts to rehabilitate differently-abled children and provide debt relief to developing countries.

 

KR Gouri Amma:

 

KR Gouri Amma  was the second longest-serving MLA in Kerala Legislative Assembly and also the last surviving member of the first Kerala government. After the split of the Communist Party in 1964, K. R. Gouri joined the newly formed Communist Party of India (Marxist). She formed and headed the political party Janathipathiya Samrakshana Samithy (JSS) in 1994 after her ouster from CPI (M). She was the driving force behind the historic Land Reforms Bill in Kerala. She had won 13 assembly elections, out of the total 17 contested. She passed away last year at the age of 102.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been announced as the Secretariat for Science 20 (S20), the G20 summit’s science working group.

 

 

Key Points

 

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been announced as the Secretariat for Science 20 (S20), the G20 summit’s science working group. IISc stated that S20 will play a key role in helping resolve global issues like poverty and bring together the developments made by the G20 member states for development. The deliberations will focus on three sets of issues: Universal holistic health, clean energy for greener future, and connecting science to society and culture. The consultations will also include an inception meeting in Puducherry and a summit meeting in Coimbatore.

 

Theme of This Working Group:

 

S20 2023 theme is ‘Disruptive Science for Innovative and Sustainable Development’, under which many deliberations will be held through the year in Agartala, Lakshadweep and Bhopal.

 

Significance

 

Over the years G20 has been working towards addressing other global challenges as well, such as climate change mitigation and sustainable development. In a bid to work towards this purpose, it has set up several working groups, one of which is Science 20 or S20.

 

Science have to play a key role to achieve economic growth required to uplift millions of people out of poverty while, at the same time, ensuring that development is inclusive and sustainable. But scientific advancements alone are not enough. Meaningful development requires the cooperation of member nations so that experiences and breakthroughs in science and technology can be shared with each other.
