Olympic champion Neeraj again created history, became Diamond League champion for the first time

Why is it in news?

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has created history once again, winning the 2022 Diamond League Championship in Zurich. Neeraj Chopra has won this championship by throwing 88.44m Javelin. In second place was the Olympic silver medalist Jakob Vadlej of the Czech Republic. Chopra defeated Czech Republic's Jacob Vadledge (86.94m) and Julian Weber (83.73m) in the six-man final.

Introduction

After the Olympic Games, the Diamond League Championship is a prestigious event of the Javelin Games. It was established in the year 2010. The Diamond League is an annual series of track and field athletic competitions. The Diamond League has replaced the IAAF Golden League, which is being organized annually since 1998. Its full name is Wanda Diamond League. It was announced in the year 2019. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Diamond League has excluded athletes from Russia and Belarus.

Highlights

• After this victory, Neeraj has also got a wild card for the World Athletics Championships 2023 to be held in Budapest, Hungary, although he has already qualified for the World Championship 2023. He won the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo on 07 August last year.

• After becoming the 2022 Diamond League champion, Neeraj has been awarded the Diamond Trophy and prize money of $30,000.

• After this historic victory, Neeraj has now become Olympic champion, World Championship silver medalist and Diamond League champion.

• This was Neeraj's third Diamond League final. Prior to this, he had finished fourth and seventh in the year 2018 and 2017 respectively.

• Neeraj won the silver medal in the 18th edition of the 2022 World Athletics Championships by performing brilliantly. This competition was held in Oregon, United States. During that time he suffered an injury, due to which he did not participate in the Commonwealth Games.

• After this victory, Neeraj Chopra said that this was his last competition of this year. Now he will enter the field next year.

• Now he will go to Paris for a holiday. Athletics Federation of India has congratulated Neeraj on this victory. Also, after this victory, Neeraj has thanked his fans in the country and abroad.


Britain's Queen Elizabeth II dies, her son Charles III becomes Britain's new monarch

Why is it in news?

• Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96. There is a wave of mourning in Britain after his death.

• She was the Queen of Britain for more than 70 years. He died in his castle Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

• Due to ill-health, instead of traveling to London, Boris Johnson himself went to Scotland to meet him and completed the formalities of his resignation, as well as the new Prime Minister Liz Truss went to Balmoral for the formalities of the transfer of power.

• Queen Elizabeth II died on 08 September 2022. The leaders of the country and abroad have expressed deep grief over his death.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences by releasing his old picture with him. After his death, 10 days of national mourning was declared by the British Government.

• After the death of the Queen, her eldest son, Prince of Wales, Charles III has now become the new King or Monarch. King Charles III and his wife 'The Queen's Consort' Camilla Rosemary Shando return to London from Scotland today.

• In connection with his death, Buckingham Palace said in a statement that 'the Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral'.

• Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 in Mayfair, London, United Kingdom. Her childhood name was Elizabeth Alexandra Marie. She was the child of George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

• She was married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. who had passed away last year only. Her residence was the Royal House Windsor, where she lived.

• The Queen took the throne in 1952 after the death of her father, George VI. And remained the Queen of Britain for seven decades.

• When he took office, Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the country.

• Longest in office: She became the longest-reigning queen in British history in 2015, overtaking her great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

• His coronation was televised for the first time in British history.

• During his reign, the British Empire also disintegrated in most of Africa and Asia.

• Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic were one of the challenges of his reign.

• On 09 April 2021, her husband and the longest-reigning monarch in British history, Prince Philip, died at the age of 99.

• Truss, the 15th Prime Minister of his reign, was invited this week to form the new government.


Successfully test-fired Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile

Why is it in news?

• Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Army in a joint effort successfully test-fired six flights of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System.

• This test has been done from the Integrated Testing Area, Chandipur in Odisha.

• With the help of this flight test, the Indian Army has completed the evaluation test of these missile systems.

Highlights

• Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. Which is designed and developed by DRDO. The purpose of its development is to provide protection to the army's armored vehicles and military convoys from air attacks.

• Significantly, with these various tests, the Indian Army wanted to ensure that the capability of the weapon systems could be properly assessed in different situations.

• It was tested on targets at varying speeds, tuned to suit actual threats. In this test phase, long-range and medium-altitude targets and targets that were not easily caught on the radar were included. Due to which six flight tests of this missile system were conducted. This missile system has been tested in both night and day conditions.

• All indigenously developed sub-systems were used during this test. Which included mobile launcher, radio frequency seeker, automatic command and control system etc.

• The missile system was developed by DRDO's Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune and Research and Development Establishment (Engineer), Pune, Electronic and Radar Development Establishment, Bengaluru Equipment Research and Development Establishment, Dehradun and Missile Complex Laboratories Hyderabad and Balasore. 


Indian Army Chief conferred the honorary rank of Army General of Nepal

Why is it in news?

Recently, in a special ceremony at the President's official residence 'Sheetal Niwas' in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, Indian Army Chief General Pandey was conferred with the title of Honorary General of the Nepalese Army during his visit to Nepal.

Highlights

• Commander-in-Chief General K.M. Cariappa was the first Indian Army Chief to be awarded this title in 1950. In November last year, Nepal's Army Chief General Prabhu Ram Sharma was also conferred with the title of Honorary General of the Indian Army by President Ram.

• The practice follows a seven-decade-old tradition of conferring honorary titles on the army chiefs of each other's country.

• General Pandey is on a four-day official visit to Nepal from 5th to 8th of this month. This is his first visit to Nepal as the Chief of Army Staff.

• General Manoj Pandey on behalf of the Government of India provided light vehicles as well as training equipment to the Nepalese Army which will enhance the capabilities of the Nepalese Army personnel.

• Prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, he has also served as the Eastern Army Commander. From June 2020 to May 2021, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command.


3 Indian cities included in UNESCO Network of Learning Cities

Why is it in news?

Recently, three cities of India have joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. These include two cities Thrissur and Nilambur in Kerala and Warangal in Telangana.

Introduction

Launched in 2013, the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is an international policy based network. It aims to ensure the development of all learning cities by sharing ideas and arts with other cities. So far, 294 cities from 76 countries are included in this list.

Highlights

• Warangal is the second UNESCO recognition for Telangana. Earlier, Ramappa Temple in Mulugu district was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

• This time in this list of UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, Ukraine's capital Kyiv, South African city Durban and UAE city Sharjah have been included.

• In the year 2022, 77 cities from 44 countries of the world including India have been included in this list.

• Inclusion of these cities will encourage exchange of ideas with other cities and sharing of methods of systems already implemented in these cities.

Nilambur (Kerala)

Nilambur is a famous eco-tourism destination in Kerala. Majority of the population here is dependent on agriculture and allied industries.

Nilambur's inclusion in this list will further promote sustainable development through community ownership, gender equality, inclusiveness as well as creating employment opportunities in the city and achieving the goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Thrissur (Kerala)

Thrissur is an important center of educational and research institutions, it is considered the cultural capital of Kerala. It is also known as gold art and jewelery industry in particular. By being included in this UNESCO list, Thrissur will benefit the world with its intellectual, educational and jewelery arts and will benefit from cultural inclusion.

Warangal

Warangal is a city with rich cultural heritage of Telangana. It is a major tourist destination of the state. More than 32 lakh tourists visit here every year. The economy of Warangal mainly depends on agricultural and industrial centres. The development of this city will further accelerate after it is included in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
