India's first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell bus launched
Why
is it in news?
• Union Minister of
State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh has launched India's first
indigenous hydrogen fuel cell bus developed by KPIT-CSIR in Pune.
• Speaking on the
occasion, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that Prime Minister Modi's Hydrogen Vision is
important for India to ensure access to clean energy, meeting climate change
goals and creation of new entrepreneurs and this is Prime Minister Modi's
National Green Hydrogen In line with the mission.
• The specialty of this
technology developed by CSIR-NCL is an innovative downstream process
technology, which makes this indigenous technology competitive at global
standards.
Highlights
• Significantly, the
fuel cell involved in this uses hydrogen and air to generate the electricity
used to power the bus.
• This bus has zero
emissions as compared to diesel buses plying on long distance routes which
usually emit 100 tonnes of CO2 annually.
• Higher efficiency of
fuel cell vehicles ensures lower operating cost per kilometer as compared to
diesel powered vehicles.
What
is Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology?
• In hydrogen fuel cell
technology, a fuel cell produces electricity by an electrochemical process
using hydrogen and an oxidizer.
• The fuel cell
combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce an electric current and water is a
byproduct in the process.
• This technology also
works at 65-75 degree Celsius temperature which can withstand the heat generated
while driving.
• Hydrogen fuel cell
also converts chemical energy into electrical energy.
National
Hydrogen Energy Mission
• A National Hydrogen
Energy Mission (NHM) was announced under the Union Budget 2021-22. With the
help of this, a roadmap will be prepared to use hydrogen as an alternative
energy source. Which can bring major changes in the energy sector.
• Under this
initiative, one of the most abundant elements on earth (hydrogen) will be used
for a clean alternative fuel option.
• It emphasizes on
hydrogen production from mission green energy resources which will link India's
growing renewable energy potential with hydrogen economy.
Chandigarh airport will be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh
Why is it in news?
•
Recently, Punjab and Haryana have agreed to name Chandigarh's international
airport after Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann
held a meeting with Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala on the
issue. In this, an agreement was reached between the two states on the name.
•
Although Dushyant Chautala also recommended adding 'Panchkula' in the name of
the airport during the meeting, but ultimately the name of Shaheed Bhagat Singh
was agreed upon.
Highlights
•
It is worth noting that there was a long-standing dispute between Punjab and
Haryana regarding the name of this airport, because in addition to the central
government, Punjab and Haryana also have a stake in its construction. The
Central Government has been promoting the name of this airport as Chandigarh
Airport, while the Punjab Government has been calling it Mohali International
Airport.
•
In the year 2007, on the birth centenary celebrations of Bhagat Singh, it was
announced by the Punjab Government to name the Chandigarh airport as
Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. At the same time, the Haryana government wanted to
name this airport after Mangalsen.
•
There could never be an agreement between Punjab and Haryana on this name. The
matter between the two states also reached the Punjab-Haryana High Court, where
both the states were instructed to sit together and resolve the issue.
•
In fact, the name Chandigarh Airport was also not liked by Punjab and Haryana.
The special thing is that both the state governments also passed many
resolutions regarding the name of this airport in their assemblies but the
naming could not be done.
•
Now after agreeing on the name of Shaheed Bhagat Singh between the two states
on Saturday, this proposal will be sent to the central government soon. It is
also noteworthy that the Central Government has announced to name 13 airports
of the country, in which some states have also proposed names for the airports
of their area and sent them to the Central Government. Now Punjab and Haryana
will also send a proposal to name Chandigarh airport after Shaheed Bhagat
Singh.
