Why
is it in news?
Kanpur, the commercial
capital of Uttar Pradesh, is a huge hub of leather, textile and defense
manufacturing industries. Along with this, being a city of historical pilgrimage
centers and various prominent institutions, it receives a large number of air
travellers. Presently Kanpur airport is directly connected to four cities
namely Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Gorakhpur.

Keeping in view the increasing number of
air passengers, the Airport Authority of India has taken up the project of
development of civic amenities at Kanpur Airport, in which various passenger
amenities will be made world class at a cost of Rs.143.6 crore.

The project includes the construction of
a new terminal building and a facility to accommodate three A-321-type
aircraft.
·
The new terminal building, to be
constructed in an area of 6,248 square meters, will be able to handle 300
passengers at a time during peak hours.
·
Equipped with all state-of-the-art
passenger amenities, the terminal will have 8 check-in counters and conveyor
belts for luggage. There are also plans to build a parking area outside it to
park around 150 cars.

This terminal building will be a four
star home type energy efficient building. A reflection of local art and
heritage will be displayed in the front part of the terminal, which will be
showcased by the renowned J.K. Inspired by the temple. This development project
is expected to be completed by December 31, 2022.

With the construction of new civic
amenities and more passenger capacity terminal building at Kanpur airport,
connectivity with the city will be better and this will boost the pace of
overall progress of the area.
India's GDP grew at the rate of 13.5% in the first quarter of the current financial year
Why
is it in news?
The National
Statistical Office (NSO) has recently estimated the Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) at 36.85 lakh crore in the first quarter of the financial year 2022-23.
32.46 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2021-22. This time there is an
increase of 13.5 percent as compared to 20.1 percent in the first quarter
(2021-22). The ministry has released the GDP estimates for the first quarter
(April-June) of 2022-23 at both constant (2022-23) and current prices, as per
the released calendar of national accounts.
Highlights
Significantly, the
nominal GDP or GDP in the first quarter of 2022-23 is estimated to be ₹ 64.95
lakh crore as against ₹ 51.27 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2021-22, which
is 26.7 percent as compared to 32.4% in the first quarter of 2021-22. Indicates
an increase of %.
According to analysts
and economists reviewing the data shared by the government, all major sectors
have registered positive growth during the first quarter of FY23.
Several experts have
attributed a significant jump in GDP numbers to the pick-up in private
consumption compared to the previous quarter (January-February-March 2022).
Apart from this, many other sectors which were battling the impact of the pandemic
have also recovered amid the COVID-19 fears. Private consumption has seen an
increase of about 26 percent.
What
was the basis of GDP estimate?
The quarterly estimates
of national accounts are indicator based based on data input estimates from
various ministries, private agencies. Compilation of GDP estimates in the
following areas like Index of Industrial Production, Financial performance of
listed companies in private corporate sector based on quarterly financial results
available for companies, Crop production target for 2022-23, Production of
major livestock products for 2022-23 The target has been prepared based on
indicators from sectors such as production/consumption of cement and steel,
freight traffic at major sea ports, and commercial vehicle sales.
Growth
not as expected:
The GDP figure for the
April-May-June quarter was a significant improvement over the previous quarter
i.e. January-February-March 2022 in which India's GDP grew by only 4.1%. The
country witnessed a GDP growth of 20.1% in the corresponding quarter of the
previous year - April-May-June 2021; However, this figure was increased due to
economic contraction in that year of the pandemic.

Why
is it in news?
• After more than two
years, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has removed the price cap on domestic
airfares with effect from August 31. This decision is going to have a direct
impact on the pockets of air travelers.
• With this decision,
the country's airlines will have the freedom to set their own fare. The
Ministry of Civil Aviation had brought in upper and lower limits on domestic
ticket prices.
• After a period of
about 27 months, the limit imposed on domestic airfares will be removed from
August 31, the Union Aviation Ministry had issued a press note in this regard
earlier this month (10 August 2022).
Highlights
• With the removal of
the price cap on domestic airfares, airlines can charge passengers whatever
fares they deem fit.
• Airlines may offer
discounts in flight ticket prices to attract more passengers. Earlier, airlines
could not offer discounts due to lower and upper price limits on domestic
airfares imposed by the government.
• During the price cap
(limit on airfare prices) period, Indian airlines are required to charge less
than Rs 2,900 (excluding GST) and more than Rs 8,800 (excluding GST) for
domestic flights of less than 40 minutes. was not allowed.
• After the nationwide
Covid-19 lockdown, the Ministry of Civil Aviation imposed lower and upper
limits on domestic airfares in May 2020. While the government allowed 100 per
cent capacity deployment in October 2021, it continued with pricing regulation.
• Upper caps to protect
passengers from higher fares and lower caps to help financially weaker
airlines.
• With this decision,
airlines will be free to set their own prices. However, airlines can reduce
flight ticket prices to attract more passengers.
• The Russia-Ukraine
conflict has led to a fall in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Which is a
good sign for travelers.
