for establishment of BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Centre at Colombo, Sri Lanka
The Union Cabinet chaired by the
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved a Memorandum of Association
(MoA) by India for establishment of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral
Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Technology Transfer Facility (TTF)
was signed by the BIMSTEC member countries at the 5th BIMSTEC
Summit held at Colombo, Sri Lanka on 30th March, 2022.
Why is it in news?
The main objectives of the BIMSTEC
TTF are to coordinate, facilitate and strengthen cooperation in technology
transfer among the BIMSTEC Member States by promoting the transfer of
technologies, sharing of experiences and capacity building.
Highlights

The TTF shall facilitate transfer of
technologies among the BIMSTEC Member States, amongst other things, in the
following priority areas Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Information and
Communication Technology, Space technology applications, Agricultural
technology, Food processing technology, Pharmaceutical technology automation,
New and renewable energy technology automation, New and Renewable energy
technology, Oceanography, Nuclear Technology Applications, E-waste and solid waste
management technology, Health Technologies, Technologies pertinent to Disaster
Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.

The TTF shall have a Governing Board
and the overall control of activities of the TTF shall be vested in the
Governing Board. The Governing Board shall consist of one nominee from
each Member State.
The expected outcomes of the BIMSTEC
TTF are:
i.
Databank of technologies available
in BIMSTEC Countries,
ii.
Repository of information on good
practices in the areas of technology transfer management, standards,
accreditation, metrology, testing and calibration facilities,
iii.
Capacity building, sharing of
experiences and good practices in development, and
iv.
Transfer and use of technologies
among BIMSTEC countries.

Authority on repayment of GoI loans for a period of three years
The
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra
Modi has approved a moratorium of three years (2020-21, 2021-22 & 2022-23)
to Cochin Port Authority (CoPA) towards repayment of the balance outstanding
Government of India (GoI) loans amounting to Rs. 446.83 crore to tide over the
financial crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The amount was to be repaid in 10 instalments commencing
from 2018-19. However, Cochin Port Authority could pay the instalments of
2018-19 and 2019-20 only. From 2020-21, the traffic was badly impacted
due to Covid-19 pandemic which adversely impacted the cash inflow. As a
result, Cochin Port could not pay the instalments of 2020-21 and 2021-22.
Cochin Port has been brought under the Major Port
Authorities Act, 2021 with effect from November 2021. The Cabinet
Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 24.08.2016 had approved the proposal
for waiver of Penal interest on Government of India Loans taken by Cochin Port
for various infrastructural developmental activities during 1936-37 to
1994-95.

construction & maintenance of a Cable Stayed Bridge across River Chambal on
Kota Bypass on NH-76 of East-West Corridor in Rajasthan is completed.

Why is it in news?
Shri Gadkari said the 1.4 Km long
Cable-Stayed Bridge across Chambal river was built with a total CAPEX of
approximately Rs. 214 Crore and inaugurated in 2017 by the Prime Minister.

He said the bridge is the part of
Kota Bypass and part of the East-West corridor from Porbander (Gujrat) to
Silcher (Assam).The bridge comes with a state-of-the art system such as-capable
of handling extreme traffic-jam situations and is built to handle heavy rains,
winds, storms and is even equipped with earthquake notification which is sent
to the control room of the bridge. The cables of the bridge are aerodynamic in
nature and have the ability to be neutral in stormy winds, he added.

The Minister said to prevent
disturbance to wildlife, a 7.5 m Noise Barrier with approx 70% visibility in
700 m length on both side of the bridge has been installed.He said the project
has not only benefitted residents of Hadoti region of Rajasthan but has also
contributed to reducing the traffic congestion in Kota city.
