Safety and Security of
women have always been paramount to the Indian Railways. Railway Protection
Force (RPF) and frontline railway staff are relentlessly working to ensure safe
& secure travel of women over the Indian railways. Dedicated to this
objective of women security a pan India drive "Operation Mahila
Suraksha" was launched from 3rd to 31st May
2022.
Why is it in news?
During this drive, RPF has
arrested more than 7000 persons who were traveling unauthorized in the coaches
reserved for women. RPF also rescued 150 girls/women from falling a prey to
human trafficking.
Highlights
·
With
an objective of providing enhanced safety and security to lady passengers
travelling by trains for their entire journey a pan India initiative "Meri
Saheli" is also operational. 283 teams (covering 223 stations) of trained
mahila officers and personnel with an average total deployment of 1125 lady RPF
personnel per day, are deployed across the Indian railways who interacted with
more than 2 Lakh 25 thousand ladies during this period and provided them end to
end security.

Train
escort duties with mixed composition of male & female RPF personnel were
also widely deployed during this period. Mixed escort duties have commenced few
months back and are getting a positive feedback.
· To educate the rail users
regarding their safety and Dos & Don'ts during their journey, 5742
awareness campaigns were organized. During this month
long operation, RPF personnel risking their own life, saved the life of 10
ladies who had slipped while boarding/ de-boarding the moving train and were
likely to get run over by the moving train.
· Indian Railways is keen and determined to continue to
enhance women security cover over the railway network.

transparent, efficient, and economic procurement system
The Union Cabinet under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modi, has approved the registration of cooperative societies as
‘Buyers’ on Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform
Under the leadership of Union Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, Ministry
of Cooperation is encouraging Multi State Cooperative Societies and Cooperative
Societies registered under State Cooperative Acts to join the GeM
The Union Cabinet under the
visionary leadership of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has
approved the registration of cooperative societies as ‘Buyers’ on Government
e-Marketplace (GeM) platform. This will enable the cooperative societies to
access more than 45 Lakh vendors on a single platform and to follow a
transparent, economic and efficient procurement system.
Why is it in news?
Under
the leadership of Union Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, Ministry of Cooperation
is encouraging Multi State Cooperative Societies and Cooperative Societies
registered under State Cooperative Societies Acts to join the GeM platform for
the benefit of their members and hopes that more and more Cooperatives
Societies will get benefit of this by joining GeM platform.
Highlights
· At present, there are about
8.54 lakh cooperatives in India with about 29 crore membership. They have been
performing a wide range of activities for the production of goods and services.
These cooperatives make huge purchases of goods and services from the open
market to support their operations.
·
There
was a felt need to provide a platform to them to avail competitive prices
through a transparent and efficient process resulting in benefit to the members
of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has
been set up as a National Procurement Portal to provide an end-to-end online
market place for Central and State Government Ministries/ Departments, and PSUs
etc. for procurement of common-use goods and services in a transparent and
efficient manner.

The Gross Merchandise Value of
procurement using GeM was more than Rs.1 lakh crore in the FY 2021-22. There
are around 54 lakh products listed across 9,702 product categories and 279
service categories. There was an estimated savings of around Rs.10,000 crores
in the FY 2021-22.
Purchases through GeM will provide
the following benefits:
1.
The Cooperatives would get
competitive prices through an open and transparent process, and this would be
economically beneficial to the members of the societies.
2.
The Cooperative societies can
procure from about 45 lakh authenticated sellers/ service providers available
across the country on a single GeM platform,
3.
Following the standard procedures on
GeM would lead to saving of time and reduction in the administrative burden.
4.
It would enhance the credibility of
the cooperatives as complaints of mismanagement of funds will get reduced.
GeM authorities will provide a
dedicated on-boarding process for cooperatives, technical infrastructure and
support for on-boarding and transactions, via available contact centres,
in-field training, and other support services.

India’s mining
major National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), under Ministry of Steel
is continuing on the growth trajectory, produced 3.2 Million Tonnes (MnT) and
sold 2.65 MnT in the second month of FY23.
Why is it in news?
Iron ore production
in May 2022 was 14.3% higher than the 2.8 Million Tonnes (MnT )produced in May
2021. NMDC’s cumulative production upto May 2022 stood at 6.35 (Million Tonnes)
MnT, a 7.4% growth from the cumulative production of 5.91 (Million Tonnes )MnT
upto May 2021. The largest iron ore producer of India sold 5.77(Million Tonnes)
MnT in FY23, upto May 2022 this fiscal.

Congratulating his
team on this performance, Shri Sumit Deb, CMD, NMDC said, “Our consistent
growth in production has not only made NMDC the fastest growing Iron Ore mining
Company in India but also the most consistent supplier to domestic steel

Mahotsav-India@75 is organizing World Cycle Day throughout the country on 3rd
June, 2022. Taking inspiration from inaugural speech of Prime Minister of
India, during the curtain raiser of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on 12th March 2021,
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has conceptualized celebration of Azadi ka
Amrit Mahotsav under the pillar of Actions and Resolves @75.
Why is it in news?
As
a part of World Bicycle Day on 3rd June2022, Deptt. of Youth Affairs with the
support of its two pioneer youth organizations namely Nehru Yuva Kendra
Sangathan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS) are undertaking four set of
activities simultaneously viz., Launching of World Bicycle Day in Delhi, Bicyle
Rallies in 35 States/UTs Capitals, 75 Iconic Locations across the country and
in all blocks of the country.

· Union Minister for Youth
Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Thakur will launch the Nationwide programmes
on 3rd June2022 from Majour Dhyan Chand Stadium, Delhi during which Union
Minister along with 750 Young Cyclists will peddle on 7.5 k.m distance.
Further, there will be Cycle Rallies by NYKS at 35 States/UTs capital and at 75
iconic places across the country during which 75 participants will cover the
distance of 7.5 k.m. Besides, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan with the support and
contribution of its Youth Volunteers and Members of Youth Clubs are also taking
up these Cycle Rallies in all blocks of the country on voluntary basis.
· Thus, on the occasion of
World Bicycle Day on 3rd June 2022, Cycle Rallies will be organized throughout
the country.Through this initiative, more than 9.68 Lakh K.M. distance will be
covered by 1.29 Lakh Young Cyclists through the proposed Bicycle Rallies on
single day i.e. 3rd June2022.
· The aim is to encourage and
motivate people to take up and adopt Cycling in their daily lives for physical
fitness activities and get freedom from obesity, laziness, stress, anxiety,
diseases etc. By adopting Cycling by common citizens will also facilitate in
reducing carbon footprints. Through the Observance of World Bicycle Day,
citizens will be given call to make a resolve to include physical activity at
least 30 minutes daily in their lives “FITNESS KI DOSE AADHA GHANTA ROZ”.
· The key activities of
Observance of World Bicycle Day include Buzz Creation and Message
Amplification, Awareness on Fitness and Flag-off Bicycle Rallies. Youth
Volunteers are being motivated to participate and also organize similar Cycle
Rallies in their respective villages and localities coinciding with Azadi Ka
Amrit Mahotsava.People in general and youth in particular may promote Bicycle
Rallies on their social media channels with #Cycling4India and
#worldbicycleday2022.
· Prominent people, Public
Representatives, PRI leaders, social workers, sports persons and other
dignitaries are being requested to participate, encourage and motivate the
people by gracing these events at various levels.
· Central Government
Ministries, States Governments and other Organizations are being requested to
grace the Bicycle Rallies in their respective localities. To make the
Observance of World Bicycle Day people driven, efforts are being made to
encourage friends, families and peer groups etc to participate in the event in
maximum numbers.

Focus On Faster and Environ-friendly Transportation of Coal
The Ministry of Coal, in view
of cleaner environment in coal transportation has given momentum in rail evacuation
and also initiating news efforts to gradually move away from road movement
of coal in country. Planned construction of new broad gauge rail lines in
Greenfield coal bearing areas, extending the rail links to newer loading points
and doubling and tripling the rail lines in some cases will enhance
rail capacity considerably.
Why is it in news?
PM launched Gati Shakti- Nation
Master Plan for Infrastructure development in October 2021 with the objective
to bring different Ministries together and for integrated planning and
coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity Projects. It will
incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various Ministries and State
Governments and will also leverage technology extensively including spatial
planning tools.
Highlights

In line with the goal of PM Gati
Shakti, the Ministry of Coal has undertaken 13 Railway Projects to develop
multimodal connectivity and identified missing infrastructure gaps for each
projects.
·
Four Railway projects are
successfully mapped in the NMP portal under High Impact projects which will be
developed in the States of Jharkhand and Odisha and will facilitate movement of
coal with rapid logistics and wider connectivity for all the commercial miners.
