President of India Graces the 61st Annual Conference of Bodo Sahitya Sabha

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind graced the 61st annual conference of Bodo Sahitya Sabha at Tamulpur, Assam today (May 4, 2022).

Why is it in news?

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the atmosphere of harmony and peace in the region is becoming stronger with the joint efforts of Union Government and State Governments of the North-Eastern region. He noted that developmental works have an important role in this change. He appreciated Central Government, State Governments and residents of the region for this change.

Highlights

·       The President noted that the month of May is very important for the Bodo people as they remember Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma on May 1 which is his death anniversary.

·       He said that Bodofa had spread the message of "live and let live". His message of maintaining harmony with all communities is well respected by all, while consciousness of Bodo self-pride will be forever relevant. 

·       The President appreciated Bodo Sahitya Sabha for making invaluable contribution for past 70 years in strengthening the Bodo language, literature and culture. He said that the Founder-President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Joy Bhadra Hagzer and General Secretary Sonaram Thosen had made commendable efforts in recognition of Bodo language. This Sabha has also played important role in use of Bodo language as the medium of school education and place in the higher education. 

·       The President noted that so far 17 writers have been awarded Sahitya Akademi Awards for their works in Bodo language. And out of that 10 have been awarded for poetry work. This shows the natural inclination towards poetry among Bodo writers.

·       He was happy to note that many women are writing in different genres of Bodo literature. But it has also been observed that only two women are among senior writers who have received the Sahitya Akademi Award for original works, he said. He urged 'Bodo Sahitya Sabha' to encourage women writers.

·       He said that to keep any literature alive and relevant, the participation of the younger generation is very important. Therefore, special encouragement should also be given to young writers by Bodo Sahitya Sabha

·       The President was happy to note that the works of other languages are being translated into Bodo language with great enthusiasm. He said that it is the characteristic of any vibrant literary community. He expressed confidence that such translated literature would give an opportunity to the readers of Bodo language to get acquainted with other Indian languages as well as world literature. 

·       The President said that the conservation and promotion of local languages is the responsibility of the society and the government. He appealed the Government of Assam to make efforts to promote Bodo language.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi addressed the inaugural session of the fourth edition of the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure via video message today. 

Highlights

·       The session was also addressed by the Hon. Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana, Hon. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan and  H..E. Andry Nirina Rajoelina, President of Madagascar.

·       At the outset, Prime Minister Modi reminded the gathering that the solemn promise of the Sustainable Development Goals is to leave no one behind. “That is why, we remain committed to meeting the needs of the poorest and the most vulnerable by building the next generation infrastructure to realize their aspirations”, he said.  The Prime Minister said that infrastructure is about people and providing them high quality, dependable, and sustainable services in an equitable manner. “People must be at the heart of any infrastructure growth story. And, that is exactly what we in India are doing”, he said.

·       As India is scaling-up the provision of fundamental services in India in the areas of education, health, drinking water, sanitation, electricity, transport and much more, said the Prime Minister, “We are also tackling climate change in a very direct way. That is why, at COP-26 we have committed to attain 'Net Zero' by 2070, in parallel with our developmental efforts.”

·       The Prime Minister talked about the importance of infrastructure in unleashing the human potential and said that damage to infrastructure leads to lasting damage for generations. In the context, the Prime Minister asked “with modern technology and knowledge at our disposal, can we create resilient infrastructure that is built to last?” Recognition of this challenge under-pins the creation of the CDRI, he said. He also noted that the coalition has expanded and made valuable contributions. He mentioned the initiative on 'Infrastructure for Resilient Island States' that was launched at COP-26 and CDRI's work on Resilient Airports studying 150 airports around the world. The 'Global Assessment of Disaster Resilience of Infrastructure Systems' that is being led by CDRI will help create global knowledge that would be immensely valuable, Shri Modi informed.

·       The Prime Minister said that in order to make our future resilient we have to work towards a 'Resilient Infrastructure Transition'. Resilient infrastructure can also be the centrepiece of our wider adaptation efforts. “If we make infrastructure resilient, we prevent disasters not only for ourselves but for many future generations”, he added.
  


Ministry of Development of North East Region shall focus on its role of a coordinator to accelerate pace of developmental initiatives.

Ministry of Development of North East Region shall focus on its role of a coordinator to accelerate pace of developmental initiatives.

The minister for Development of North East Region, Tourism and Culture, Shri G. Kishan Reddy today presided over an interactive session with senior officials of the Government of India and State Governments of the 8 north eastern States.

The Minster called upon the senior officials to leverage this interactive session to collectively brainstorm on important themes concerning the development of the North East Region and accelerate the pace of development.

Why is it in news?

The Minister said that all the officers to jointly work on an action plan for the holistic development of the region and complete utilization of funds.

Focus needed on key areas such as Agriculture, employment generation, skill development, connectivity and infrastructure, social services including health and education and Tourism development in the NER along with infrastructural development

The Minister also emphasised that a scientific gap analysis needs to be conducted, where strengths and weaknesses need to be identified for a targeted action.

Agenda for the next financial year would be to ensure that the funds under 10%GBS are completely utilized, projects are implemented quickly and aligned to the realities of the North East Region.

Minister also appreciated the highly talented and capable women of North East Region and said that their potential should be tapped for holistic development of the region

·       The Minister also stressed that his agenda for the next financial year would be to ensure that the funds under 10%GBS are completely and fruitfully utilized, projects are implemented quickly without delays and aligned to the realities of the North East Region.

·       The Minister said that newly constituted “Agri-task force” would help in ensuring optimum utilization of funds and maximum benefit to the people of the region. He requested that coordination and cooperation of all the State Governments would be critical for its success.

·       The Minister also emphasised that a scientific gap analysis needs to be held, where strengths and weaknesses need to be identified for a targeted action.

·       He further said that, the States and central ministeries must equally focus on social development and employment generation along with a continued focus on infrastructural development. He said that this would important to ensure that development reaches the last mile and manifests itself in the form improved standard of living and social upliftment.

·       The Minister called upon all the officers to jointly work on an action plan for the holistic development of the region and complete utilization of funds. Hon’ble Minister also appreciated the talented and capable women of North East Region and said that their potential should be tapped for holistic development of the region, he also added.

·       The Minister further informed that a 2-day workshop would be held in Delhi soon with all the central and Sate stakeholders to carry forward the momentum built up by this conference.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Ms. Katrin Jakobsdottir, Prime Minister of Iceland, in Copenhagen on the sidelines of the 2nd India-Nordic Summit.

Why is it in news?
Both Prime Ministers warmly recalled their first meeting during the 1st India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm in April 2018. They noted that this year both countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.

Highlights

·       Both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen economic cooperation especially in the sectors of geothermal energy, Blue Economy, Arctic, renewable energy, fisheries, food processing, education including digital universities, and culture.

·       Geothermal energy, in particular, is an area where Iceland has special expertise, and both sides stessed on collaboration between universities of both countries in this sector. Prime Minister lauded Prime Minister Jakobsdottir's personal efforts at promoting gender equality and briefed her on India's advances in this regard. Discussions also took place on expediting the India - EFTA trade negotiations and on regional and global developments.
