Department of Consumer Affairs launches mascot 'Jagruti'

Why is it in news?

Recently, the 'Jagruti' mascot was launched by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) to empower consumers and create awareness about their rights.

Highlights

• Jagriti" mascot will be used for creating consumer awareness about various subjects of this department. These topics are - Provisions of Consumer Protection Act 2019, Hallmarking, National Consumer Helpline Toll Free Number 1915, Weights and Measures Act Comments of consumers on the provisions of the Central Consumer Protection Authority, decisions of the Central Consumer Protection Authority and grievance redressal.

• With the introduction of Jagriti mascot, DOCA aims to strengthen its consumer awareness campaign presence in digital and multimedia and strengthen a strong and informed young consumer as a top-of-mind consumer rights awareness brand of Recall.

• Jagriti mascot will be featured in all its media campaigns with the tagline "Jago Grahak Jago". Both of them are new synonyms of the conscious young consumers and draw attention towards consumer rights knowledge and activities.

• It is worth mentioning that Jago Grahak Jago is a consumer awareness campaign. It was launched by the Food Department in 2005. The government used various mediums to raise awareness among consumers – media advertising, printing, audio campaigns, video campaigns and posters.

Introduction

Consumer Rights can be defined as “the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, price, purity and standard of goods or services”. Consumer Protection was established in 1986 to protect the interests of consumers in India. Act 1986 was created. It came into force on 24 December 1986. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 has now replaced the 1986 Act.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019

• In 2019, the amended Consumer Protection Act was adopted by the Parliament. The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 was replaced when it came into force in July 2020.

• An Act for the protection of consumer interests and for the said purpose, to establish authorities for the timely and effective administration and settlement of consumer disputes and for matters connected therewith or connected therewith.

• The primary goal of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 is to protect the rights of customers by establishing institutions for speedy and efficient administration and resolution of consumer disputes.

PV Sindhu wins Singapore Open 2022 title

Why is it in news?

• India's Olympic medalist PV Sindhu recently won the Singapore Open 2022 title by defeating Wang Xie of China in the women's singles final.

• Be aware that PV Sindhu defeated Wang Xie 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 to win her third title of the year in the form of Singapore Open 2022. Prior to this, PV Sindhu also won the women's singles title at the Syed Modi International Tournament 2022 in January and the Swiss Open 2022 in March.

 

Highlights

• It is noteworthy that Sindhu entered the women's singles final at Singapore Open 2022 by defeating Saina Kawakami of Japan in the semi-finals on July 15, 2022.

• PV Sindhu defeated Kawakami in two straight sets of 15-21 and 7-21 in just 31 minutes, which played a key role in her victory in the Singapore Open 2022 final. The special thing is that this is the first Super 500 final of this year for Sindhu.

• PV Sindhu made it to the semi-finals on July 15, 2022 by defeating Han Yu of China 17-21 21-11 21-19 in a close contest to make it to the semi-finals.

• Indian shuttlers Arjun MR and Dhruv Kapila lost 21-10, 18-21, 17-21 to Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the quarterfinals.

• PV Sindhu made it to the semi-finals on July 15, 2022 by defeating Han Yu of China 17-21 21-11 21-19 in a close contest to make it to the semi-finals.
