• Pravasi Bharatiya
Divas is celebrated every year on 9 January in India.
• This day is also
celebrated to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in
Mumbai (then Bombay) on January 9, 1915.
• The day is celebrated
to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of
India.
• The day was formally
established in 2003.
• The celebrations of
this day are sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation
of Indian Industry (CII).
• The 16th Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas was organized in New Delhi with the theme “Contribution to
Self-reliant India”.
