  • Why in News?
    • The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) recently celebrated the successful birth of a mouse deer as part of its ongoing conservation and breeding initiatives.
  • Key Provisions:-
    • Also known as the Indian Chevrotain, this species is the smallest member of the deer family and is recognized for its timid and secretive behavior.
    • It features dark brown fur with white underparts and distinctive rows of white spots along its back. Males are notable for their tusk-like upper canines.
    • Unlike other ruminants, it possesses a three-chambered stomach. Primarily a herbivore, it feeds on fruits, roots, leaves, and herbs, though it occasionally consumes insects and small animals. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is found across the Western and Eastern Ghats, central Indian forests, and has historical sightings in Nepal. In Sri Lanka, a related species exists.
    • Ecologically, it contributes as a seed disperser and serves as prey to several predators. It is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN and under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act.

  • Why in News?
    • India, serving as the Vice President of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), actively took part in the 2nd Council Session held in Nice, France.
  • Key Provisions:-
    • IALA was originally founded in 1957 as a non-governmental organization, but in 2024, it transitioned to an intergovernmental organization (IGO) following the ratification of its convention by 34 countries.
    • The IALA Council functions as the main decision-making body, guiding efforts to enhance maritime navigation safety. Its primary goals include ensuring the safe, efficient, and economical movement of vessels by harmonizing aids to navigation worldwide. It also promotes technological advancements, fosters international collaboration, and strengthens ties among members and other maritime stakeholders.
    • With a membership of around 200, including 80 national authorities and 60 commercial entities, IALA facilitates the global exchange of information and best practices. India has been a member since IALA’s inception. The organization is headquartered in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France.

  • Why in News?
    • Exercise Shakti 2025, the eighth edition of the Indo-French joint military exercise, is scheduled to begin on June 18 at La Cavalerie, France.
  • Key Provisions:-
    • Held biennially, Exercise Shakti alternates between India and France, with the previous edition taking place in India. This joint initiative aims to strengthen the operational coordination and military partnership between the two nations.
    • The primary objective is to enhance the ability of both armed forces to conduct Multi-Domain Operations in sub-conventional warfare scenarios.
    • The exercise will focus on building interoperability, mutual trust, and professional camaraderie. It also provides an opportunity for both armies to exchange knowledge, tactics, and techniques used in joint operations.
    • Through this collaboration, the forces aim to refine their standard operating procedures and improve overall mission effectiveness. In addition to Exercise Shakti, India and France also engage in other military exercises such as Desert Knight (air forces), Varuna (naval), and Garuda (air forces).
