  • According to the 2024 World Migration Report, India made history in 2022 by exceeding the $100 billion mark in remittances, receiving over USD 111 billion. This marked a significant milestone, with India leading the pack as the top recipient of remittances globally.
  • The World Migration Report, published bi-annually by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), provides essential insights into migration trends and issues. The latest report highlights a steady increase in the number of international migrants over the past five decades. In 2020, the global estimate stood at approximately 281 million international migrants, constituting 3.6 percent of the world's population.


  • The African Union (AU) has strongly denounced the Israeli military's recent incursions into southern Gaza's Rafah, urging the international community to intervene and halt what it terms "this deadly escalation" of the conflict.
  • Established in 2002, the AU is a continental body comprising 55 member states across Africa, succeeding the Organization of African Unity (OAU), founded in 1963.   • The limitations of the Widal Test are casting a shadow over India's efforts to accurately assess its typhoid burden, resulting in increased healthcare costs and a heightened risk of antimicrobial resistance.
  • The Widal Test, utilized for diagnosing typhoid fever, detects antibodies against Salmonella Typhi in a patient's blood sample. However, its reliability is marred by several factors. Unlike some point-of-care tests, the Widal Test does not require specialized skills or infrastructure, but its effectiveness is compromised by its historical flaws.

  • As concerns rise over the proliferation of advanced weapons such as hypersonic missiles, Japan is taking proactive steps by investing in the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) Project in collaboration with the United States.
  • The GPI Project is a joint effort aimed at developing a missile-intercepting system. By the target date of 2032, both Washington and Tokyo aspire to attain full operational readiness for this innovative defense mechanism.

  • Recently, two Australian weather agencies have alerted to the potential re-emergence of the Positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), also known as the Indian Nino, for the second consecutive year during the latter half of 2024.
  • The Indian Nino, akin to its Pacific counterpart, manifests in the Indian Ocean, spanning from the Indonesian and Malaysian coastline in the east to the African coastline near Somalia in the west. Characterized by cooler sea-surface temperatures (SST) in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean and warmer SSTs in the western tropical Indian Ocean, a positive IOD sets the stage for distinct weather patterns.

  • The upcoming 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environment Protection (CEP) are scheduled to take place in Kochi from May 20 to May 30.
