- Union Finance Ministry Approves Maitri-II Research Station in Eastern Antarctica
- Key Provisions:-
- The Union Finance Ministry has approved the establishment of Maitri-II, India’s fourth research base in Antarctica, which is expected to become operational by January 2029. Designed as an eco-friendly station, Maitri-II will operate primarily on renewable energy sources like solar and wind and will include advanced automated scientific instruments.
- Significance of Antarctica:
- Antarctica, the Earth’s fifth largest continent, serves as a crucial natural laboratory for studying climate change and ocean systems. It contains about 75% of the planet’s freshwater and is rich in resources such as edible algae, diverse marine species, and minerals like iron and copper. Geopolitically, it remains a sensitive region due to overlapping territorial claims and strategic infrastructure expansion by nations like China.
- India’s Antarctic Endeavour:
- India currently operates two research bases—Maitri (1989) and Bharati (2012)—while its first, Dakshin Gangotri (1983–1990), is now a supply base. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, oversees polar missions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The Indian Antarctic Act, 2022 ensures environmental protection and compliance with India’s commitments under the Antarctic Treaty (1959), which promotes peaceful scientific cooperation.
