  • Why in News?
    • The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence (PWDV) Act, 2005, marks two decades of its enactment, aiming to safeguard women in marriages and live-in relationships from abuse by partners or their relatives.
  • Key Provisions:-
    • As per NCRB’s Crime in India 2022 report, over 4.45 lakh cases of crimes against women were recorded, with cruelty by husband or his relatives forming the largest share. The Act defines domestic violence broadly to include physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and economic abuse, as well as harassment linked to dowry. It establishes institutional mechanisms such as Protection Officers, Service Providers, shelter homes, and medical facilities to support victims. Relief measures include protection, residence, custody, and monetary orders, alongside the woman’s right to reside in the shared household. Despite its progressive framework, the Act faces challenges—social stigma, weak infrastructure, low conviction rates, limited awareness, and inadequate institutional capacity—while concerns over misuse through false cases persist.

  • Why in News?
    • India has entered into a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to advance Blue Port infrastructure in the country.
  • Key Provisions:-
    • Under this initiative, three pilot Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbours will be developed at Vanakbara in Diu, Karaikal in Puducherry, and Jakhau in Gujarat. These modernized harbours aim to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and resilience within India’s fisheries sector. The collaboration is aligned with the FAO Blue Ports Initiative, which focuses on transforming coastal and marine areas into hubs of sustainable social, economic, and environmental development. By integrating advanced infrastructure, improved services, and active participation of stakeholders, Blue Ports are envisioned as strategic platforms for promoting fisheries-led growth at local, national, and regional levels. Through this agreement, India seeks not only to modernize its fishing harbours but also to ensure inclusive development, better livelihoods for coastal communities, and long-term ecological sustainability.
