Liz Truss becomes the next Prime Minister of Britainv

Why is it  in news?

• Recently, Liz Truss, who has been in the news for a long time, has finally been named as the next Prime Minister of Britain. Liz Truss has been named as the leader of the governing Conservative Party and the country's next prime minister.

• Truss, currently the Foreign Secretary, has defeated her rival Rishi Sunak, and will lead Britain after Boris Johnson.

• Significantly, after the scandal was exposed in July, Johnson was forced to announce his resignation. He will travel to Scotland to meet with Queen Elizabeth to officially tender his resignation. Liz Truss will then be sworn in as the country's new prime minister.

Introduction

• Liz Truss's full name is Mary Elizabeth Truss. Who is currently serving as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development Affairs from 2021 and Minister of Women and Equality since 2019. She has also been a member of the Conservative Party from the South West Norfolk parliamentary constituency since 2010.

• 47-year-old Liz Truss was born on 26 July 1975 in Oxford, UK. His father's name is John Kenneth (math teacher) and his mother's name is Priscilla Marie Truss. She married Hugh O'Leary in the year 2000, with whom she has two daughters.

• She had her early education at Roundhay School in Leeds; at the age of seven, Liz Truss also played Margaret Thatcher (former prime minister) in one of her school functions. He later completed the study of Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.

• Liz Truss has defeated her rival and Indian-origin Rishi Sunak. Sunak was the second most popular prime ministerial candidate.

• Recently Sunak had resigned from Boris Johnson's cabinet. To gain the support of the members of the Conservative Party, Sunak and Truss participated in many programs and expressed their views on various issues of the country and tried to garner support in their favor. Eventually members of the Conservative Party put their trust in Liz Truss.

• His political career began while studying at Oxford University. Truss was the chair of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats. During that time, in the 1994 convention of the party, he had talked about abolishing the monarchy system. Changing her ideology in the year 1996, she joined the Conservative Party.

• In 2006, Liz was elected as a councilor in Greenwich, south-east London, and has also worked for the right-of-centre reform think tank since 2008.

• She first became an MP for the South West Norfolk parliamentary constituency in 2010.

• In the year 2012, she joined the government as the Minister of Education and made important changes in the education sector. Due to the growing popularity of the truss, he was promoted as the Environment Secretary in the year 2014.

• Served as Chief Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of Justice during the tenure of former British Prime Minister Theresa May.

• After Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in 2019, giving Truss an important responsibility, he was made the International Trade Secretary.

• He also co-authored a book called 'Britannia Unchained' in 2010.

• Liz's U-turn on the Brexit issue - Liz, while giving her views on the Brexit issue, named it 'Triple Tragedy' on the basis of excess of rules, different forms and time taken. Later taking a U-turn on Brexit, strongly supported it and defined it as an opportunity.

• Truce's stand on Russia-Ukraine conflict: He openly supported Ukraine in line with UK's stand in the Russo-Ukraine war and strongly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders including India for this war Called to support Ukraine. He has supported the recent sanctions imposed on Russia by the US and European countries.

Rajpath renamed, will now be known as ‘Kartavya Path'

Why is it in news?

Recently, the central government is preparing to make another important change. Where the government had recently changed the flag mark of the Navy, now moving forward in the same episode, it has also changed the name of Rajpath. Soon the name of Rajpath will be changed to 'Kartavya Path'. This Rajpath was called Kingsway during the British period. Along with this, the name of Central Vista Lawn will also be changed to 'Duttavya Path'.

Introduction

The road from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan (Raisina Hill) in New Delhi is known as Rajpath. On this path every year on the occasion of Republic Day, grand parades and tableaux are taken out. Now this path will be known as 'Duty Path'. The route from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Netaji's statue at India Gate will now be known as 'Duty Path'. During the British period, this Rajpath was called 'Kingsway' on the lines of Kingsway in London. After independence its name was changed to Rajpath.

 

Highlights

• It is worth noting that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has called a special meeting in this regard. In which the name change will be proposed.

• This resolution is fully expected to be passed in the meeting. Soon after the proposal of NDMC, the central government will issue a press note regarding it.

• This area comes under NDMC which is a high security area.

• Be aware that during its first term at the Center, the Modi government had renamed Aurangzeb Road in the year 2015 after former President of India and Missile Man Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Also, in the year 2016, the government changed the name of the road leading to the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi from 'Race Course Road' to 'Lok Kalyan Marg'.

• In this episode, in the year 2017, the name of Dalhousie Road was changed to Dara Shikoh Road. Also, Teen Murti Chowk was changed to Teen Murti Haifa Chowk in the year 2018.

• Significantly, in his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also mentioned that the signs of the colonial era should be gradually eliminated. At the same time, he also said that in the year 2047, when India will celebrate 100 years of independence, then our country should be free from the signs of the colonial era.

• Where people have supported this decision of the government, the same Congress has called this decision a joke. But Congress leader Milind Deora has welcomed this proposal. Along with this, leaders of many other opposition parties have welcomed this decision of the government.


'Mascot' and 'Anthem' launch of 36th National Games

Why is it in news?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the mascot and anthem of the 36th National Games at Trans Stadium in Ahmedabad. The mascot is named Savaj, which in Gujarati means 'cub' and the anthem is based on the theme of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat'.

Introduction

• Inspired the introduction of the National Games to identify the national talent that could be selected for the Olympic Games.

 

• The first edition of the Indian Olympic Games was started in 1924 in Lahore, undivided India by the efforts of Dr. A. G. Nohran and Harry Crow Buck to inspire youth to take up sports through an all-India sporting event.

• After the eighth edition in Calcutta in 1938, these games were named as National Games. After independence, the first National Games were organized in Lucknow city, while the first National Games on the lines of Olympics were held in 1985 in New Delhi.

 

Highlights

• The 11th Khel Mahakumbh also concluded during this event. The Union Home Minister also presented awards to the winners of Khel Mahakumbh.

• National Games are being organized after 7 years. Addressing the inaugural function, Union Home Minister Amit Shah talked about developing Ahmedabad city as the world's largest sports city.

• The mascot of the 36th National Games is Savaj, which in Gujarati means 'cub' or lion. The name of this mascot is also apt because it represents the cultural heritage of India, giving a glimpse of the fast growing India.

• The anthem of 36th National Games incorporates the motif of Judega India, Jeetega India and is sung by famous Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh. This song inspires the youth of the country to connect historical places like Statue of Unity and Sabarmati.

 

 

• This time the national game will be organized in Gujarat from 29th of this month to 12th of next month. It will be organized in six cities of the state namely Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. This time more than 12000 athletes and officials are participating in this Games.

• The last edition of the National Games was held in Kerala in 2015. The 2022 edition of the National Games is being organized after a gap of seven years.v


Ramon Magsaysay Award 2022 announced

Why  is it in  news?

The year 2022 Ramon Magsaysay Award has been announced. This time the award was given to four people. The 2022 Ramon Magsaysay Award winners include Gary Bencheghib, Tadashi Hattori, Sotheara Chhim and Bernadette Madrid. It is also considered as 'Asia's Nobel Peace Prize'. The award is given annually by the Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation (RMAF). This was the 64th edition of the award.

About Ramon Magsaysay Award 2022 winners:

• Sotheara Chhim: Sotheara Chhim is a Cambodian psychiatrist and mental health advocate who is treating the mental health of his countrymen. He studied medicine at the University of Health Sciences of Phnom Penh. As a child, he was forced to work in Khmer Rouge camps for more than three years.

 

• Gary Bencheghib: Gary Bencheghib is a young Frenchman on a mission to eradicate marine plastic pollution in the river in Bali, Indonesia. His parents have been living in Bali since he was nine and this has been his home since then. He runs an organization called "Make a Change World", which works on plastic pollution and environmental protection.

 

 

• Tadashi Hattori: Tadashi Hattori is a Japanese ophthalmologist and philanthropist who invested his time and resources in providing free eye surgery in Vietnam. 48-year-old Hatori was born in 1964 in Osaka, Japan. He graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in 1993. And then engaged in the work of social service.

• Bernadette Madrid: Bernadette J. Madrid is a Filipino pediatrician, working for the right of child protection. She has headed the Philippine General Hospital, Manila's first child protection center since 1997. Through this center he has served more than 27,000 children till 2021.

Indian winners of Ramon Magsaysay Award:

Prominent Indians to have won the Ramon Magsaysay Award include Vinoba Bhave (1958), Mother Teresa (1962), Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (1966), Satyajit Ray (1967) and Mahasweta Devi (1997). In more recent years, Arvind Kejriwal (2006), Anshu Gupta Goonj (2015), human rights activist Bezwada Wilson (2016), and journalist Ravish Kumar (2019) have won the prestigious award.


Coal Ministry reviews non-operational captive and commercial coal blocks of Jharkhand

Why is it in news?

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal and Nominated Authority reviewed the status of 20 non-operational captive and commercial coal blocks in Jharkhand.

Highlights

• Director (Mines & Geology) of Jharkhand along with the officials of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and PCCF-Jharkhand and the proponents of the projects were present during this.

• The Ministry of Coal appreciated the improvement in the overall condition of the non-operational coal blocks of Jharkhand and the assistance provided by the State Mining and Forest Department.

• It was observed that during the current financial year about 3 to 4 coal blocks will get mining permission and coal production will be started from four coal blocks.

• Jharkhand is expected to produce about 37.3 million tonnes of coal from captive and commercial coal blocks in 2022-23. Earlier this figure was 17.72 million tonnes in 2021-22. In this way, there will be an increase of 110.4 percent in the production of coal in the current financial year as compared to 2021-22.

• Ministry of Coal has assured all possible assistance to solve the problems faced by the project proponents.
