  • A recent study suggests that impaired metabolic flexibility to lipids in skeletal muscle may contribute to the accumulation of ectopic lipids, potentially leading to metabolic disruptions.
  • About Lipids:
    • Lipids are fatty, waxy, or oily substances that play a crucial role in various bodily functions and are vital for the structure of all living cells. Composed primarily of hydrocarbons in their most reduced form, lipids serve as an efficient energy reserve. When metabolized, the hydrocarbons oxidize, releasing significant amounts of energy.
    • Due to their non-polar nature, lipids do not dissolve in water but are soluble in non-polar solvents like chloroform. They are essential for hormone regulation, nerve signal transmission, organ protection, and energy storage in the form of body fat. Lipids also form an integral part of cell membranes, controlling the passage of substances into and out of the cells.
    • The three primary types of lipids are phospholipids, sterols (including various types of cholesterol), and triglycerides, with triglycerides making up over 95% of the lipids found in food. Foods high in lipids include fried items, animal fats, and dairy products such as cream, butter, and cheese.
    • While lipids are necessary for good health, excessive consumption can lead to conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and coronary artery disease.

  • The Sabarmati Riverfront development project, designed to revamp approximately 38 kilometers of riverbanks between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar across seven phases, has begun generating revenue from its first phase, which spans around 11 kilometers on each side of the river.
  • About Sabarmati River:
    • The Sabarmati is a monsoon-fed river that originates in the Aravalli Hills near Udaipur in Rajasthan and flows into the Bay of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea. The river's basin spans across Rajasthan and Gujarat, covering an area of 21,674 sq. km with a maximum length of 300 km and width of 150 km.
    • The river itself runs for a total of 371 kilometers, with 48 kilometers in Rajasthan and the remaining 323 kilometers in Gujarat. It flows north-south through Ahmedabad, dividing the city into its western and eastern parts.
    • The river's total catchment area also measures 21,674 sq. km, bordered by the Aravalli Hills to the north and northeast, the Rann of Kutch to the west, and the Gulf of Khambhat to the south. The majority of the basin, about 74.68%, is dedicated to agriculture.
    • The Sabarmati’s main tributaries include the Wakal, Hathmati, and Vatrak rivers joining from the left, and the Sei river, which joins from the right.

  • India will host a four-day Global Learning and Development Framework (GLDF) Results Management Training in partnership with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in New Delhi.
  • About the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA):
    • Established in 1999, WADA is an independent international agency dedicated to spearheading a global movement for doping-free sports. Its governance and funding are based on a balanced partnership between the sports community and governments worldwide.
    • WADA is a Swiss private law, non-profit foundation, with its headquarters in Montreal, Canada, and its seat in Lausanne, Switzerland. The agency's core mission is to develop, harmonize, and coordinate anti-doping rules and policies across all sports and nations.
    • WADA's key activities encompass scientific research, education, enhancing anti-doping capabilities, and monitoring the World Anti-Doping Code (the Code), which standardizes anti-doping policies across all sports and countries.
  • Governance Structure:
    • WADA's governance includes a 42-member Foundation Board, which serves as the highest policy-making body. This board is composed of representatives from the Olympic Movement (including the IOC, National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations, and athletes) and governments from all continents. The agency’s daily operations are overseen by a 16-member Executive Committee, which is delegated the responsibility for managing the agency's activities and assets.
